Alpiq paves the way for electro-mobility at 20 motorway rest areas

In a consortium with EBM, Alpiq will equip 20 motorway rest areas along national roadways with a total of 80 fast charging stations for electric vehicles. Among four different suppliers, Alpiq/EBM were awarded one of five order lots from the Swiss Federal Roads Authority (Astra). A total of 100 rest areas will be equipped with charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the upcoming years in order to create a nationwide network. As a trailblazer for future mobility, Alpiq will contribute its comprehensive engineering competence and experience to the project.

Electro-mobility is about to break through and will be a deciding factor for the decarbonisation of private transportation. In addition to electric vehicles that will come on the market in great numbers, network and charging infrastructure will be crucial for this development. As a trailblazer for future mobility, Alpiq, in cooperation with EBM (as of 26 March Primeo Energie), received one of the five lots awarded by the Swiss Federal Roads Authority (Astra) for the operation of fast charging stations along national roadways. Astra is planning a Swiss-wide national network for charging stations. The Alpiq/EBM consortium will implement the fourth package. This comprises 20 motorway rest areas throughout Switzerland (Northeastern Switzerland, the Romandie, Ticino and Eastern Switzerland).

Alpiq to take over engineering and construction of fast charging stations

Within the consortium, Alpiq is responsible for engineering as well as the technical part and the turnkey construction of the fast charging stations. EBM will take over financing of the infrastructure amounting to a 2-digit million figure and ensure operation. The first fast charging stations are scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2019. All charging stations will be equipped with the three most common connector types (CCS, CHAdeMO and type 2). A fast charge takes between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the battery power level, and at least two high power charging points with a maximum charging capacity of up to 350 kW will be available at each location.

Swiss motorway rest areas will be part of the MOVE network

Charging points will be integrated into the MOVE network, which currently operates one of the largest charging station networks in Switzerland with 800 charging points. Fast charge payments can be made with other charging, debit or credit cards, making the network available to all electric vehicle drivers. In the future, more smart, easy payment methods will be introduced to make charging even faster and easier.

Alpiq: Innovative pioneer for future mobility

Alpiq is the Swiss market leader for integrated electro-mobility solutions. Examples include charging areas at the motorway rest areas at Neuenkirch, Gotthard North and South, Heidiland and Kemptthal, where Ionity 350 kW high power charging stations have been installed.

Alpiq is also collaborating with SBB for the mobility as a service offering SBB Green Class and has, among other things, successfully implemented the infrastructure for the electric vehicle fleet of Berne Building Insurance and the electrification of the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Alpiq's think tank, Oyster Lab, developed the first flexible electro-mobility plan and with its launch in Germany and Switzerland presented an impressive example for the potential of digital services. In Italy, the Fincantieri Group, the Leonardo Group, Amazon, Esselunga, Sorgenia and the Autogas Group have put their trust in Alpiq for electro-mobility infrastructure.

Alpiq will continue to expand its offering as a solution and digital mobility services provider in Switzerland and neighbouring European countries.
