We understand buildings!
In Davos AIT experts had plenty of opportunities to prove that this slogan is no empty promise. Not only the tight schedule but also the complexity of the logistics presented a huge challenge. "The WEF is a huge industry event that calls for enormous efforts within a short period of time," explains Roman Bürki, Davos-Prättigau branch manager. The WEF organisation's design catalogue shows how every conference room, every lounge and the entire media zone should look when completed.
Some 380 decorators from Paris worked hand-in-hand with AIT's electricians to make sure everything radiated the WEF ambience. For Alpiq InTec this essentially meant discreetly integrating the 100 km of cabling in the decor so that the technical equipment disappeared "behind the scenes". Outdoor lighting ensured the safety of the world's business and political leaders. And temporary heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems were installed to ensure the comfort of participants.
The surest way to energy targets
No matter how great the major technical and logistical challenges, energy efficiency was also accorded top priority within these narrow time horizons. Alpiq InTec also advised and supported the organisers in this area, over and above its installation mandate. Two years ago the WEF started to use hybrid limousines and minibuses under the motto "Greener Davos", to signal its clear commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable resource management.
It was the declared objective of the WEF to reduce energy consumption this year by 30 percent. LED lighting was selectively used in the media zone as well as in the congress buildings. A pilot test using spotlights demonstrated the extent to which LEDs can also be used for outdoor lighting.
Another WEF energy goal is to drastically reduce CO2 emissions by a factor of 50. The related documentation, which was drawn up by AIT in the summer of 2011, charts the roadmap to this target.
