The Transtec Gotthard consortium is the general contractor for railway technology for the Gotthard and consists of the four companies Atel Installationstechnik AG (lead), Alcatel-Lucent Schweiz AG/Thales Rail Signalling Solutions AG, Alpine Mayreder GmbH and Balfour Beatty Rail GmbH. Transtec Gotthard is also strengthened by additional partners ABB Schweiz AG, Burkhalter AG, IBM Schweiz AG, Kummler+Matter AG, Pöyry Infra AG and Scheuchzer AG.
For more than nine months, a team of more than 100 engineers and experts worked on the bid. The result is a high-tech, high-quality offer with a competitive price-performance ratio. All the companies in the consortium bring outstanding skills and a wealth of experience to the table. Their combined track record includes the railway technology contract for the Lötschberg base tunnel, construction of the Eurotunnel between France and Britain, and construction of the new 300 kph high-speed track between Nürnberg and Ingolstadt.
The four members of the Transtec Gotthard consortium are among the leading companies in their field with the capability to meet the high-end requirements of the Gotthard contract. Atel, Alcatel-Lucent/Thales, Alpine Mayreder and Balfour Beatty Rail will provide their combined know-how and experience in the fields of rail track, railway lines, rail security, rail and tunnel instrumentation and controls, telecommunications, power supply systems, logistics, planning and implementation. The economic strength of these companies will ensure high-level reliability and the requisite continuity for the duration of this unique project.
The contracted work covers installation of railway technology systems for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, including the equipment for both one-way tunnels, each 57 kilometers long, the upstream and downstream north and south sections totalling 11 kilometers length, as well as connection to the existing rail network.
Atel statement on the AlpTransit Gotthard decision
Atel is delighted with AlpTransit Gotthard's decision, since it represents an opportunity for the Atel Group to demonstrate its skills in the Energy Services segment in the service of public transport. The Atel Installation Group is well equipped for the job.
With more than 6000 employees, the Atel Group's Energy Services segment consists of Atel Installationstechnik AG based in Zurich and the GAH Group based in Heidelberg, Germany. Employees are committed to promoting the effective, efficient use of energy in the widest sense of the term. This covers everything from building services and automation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning applications, to the construction of biomass and solar tower power plants and components for new nuclear power plants.
The contract for railway technology in the Gotthard tunnel is an order for the public transport sector. Public transport can also help to increase energy efficiency. The new tunnel will help to shift transalpine heavy goods traffic in Europe from road to rail. This in turn will enable substantial efficiency enhancements and help to reduce the emission of CO2 and fine dust particles.
In view of the growing awareness of the need for energy efficiency, Atel believes there are interesting growth opportunities for its Energy Services segment. The Gotthard contract supports further development of activities in this direction over the long term.
