Nant de Drance pumped storage power station

Aare-Tessin Ltd. for Electricity (Atel) has hired Eric Wuilloud to head a project for building a new pumped storage power station together with SBB AG in the Swiss canton of Valais. Until now he has been head of FMV SA, Forces Motrices Valaisannes.

Aare-Tessin Ltd. for Electricity (Atel) and SBB AG have plans to build a new pumped storage power station near lake Emosson, between Martigny and Chamonix. The projected 600 MW facility is currently on the drawing board. Atel is pleased to have been able to recruit Eric Wuilloud to head up the work: 50 years old and with a doctorate in physics, for the past seven years he has been managing director of FMV. Eric Wuilloud will take up his position in the course of this year.

The new power station represents an investment of around CHF 700 million. The entire facility will take shape underground at 1800 metres altitude. Project partners Atel and SBB plan to generate electricity from water between two existing reservoirs, Lac d’Emosson and Vieux Emosson. The final construction go-ahead is not expected before late 2007.
