Along most of its length the new 220/132 kV line will follow the route of the existing 132 kV line owned by the Industrielle Werke Basel (IWB). For over 70 years, this has linked the substation at Bickigen (community of Wynigen, BE) with the Basel region. Now, the line will be dismantled and replaced by a new 16 km line with a total of 54 masts leading to the substation at Wangen am Aare. Also going up will be a new 220 kV line with 8 masts linking the 1.5 km stretch between the Wangen a. Aare and Flumenthal substations. The Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations has granted approval for both projects.
The Flumenthal substation operated by Atel Transmission Ltd. supplies electricity to the entire Solothurn region. Until now, its sole feed has been a two-cable 220 kV line from Niedergösgen. Construction of the new lines will provide the Flumenthal substation with an additional feed from Bickigen, thus improving the security of supply.
Dismantling of the existing power line is expected to commence in March 2006. The new installations should be complete by the end of 2007. The costs are estimated at around 22 million Swiss francs.
