Atel plans gas-fired power station in France

Aare-Tessin Ltd. for Electricity (Atel) intends to build a gas-fired combined cycle power station with capacity of 400 MW in France. Construction is expected to begin in late 2007 and last for two years. Atel reckons on investing around EUR 240 million in the project.

The prospective new gas-fired combined cycle power station is to be built south of St. Pourçain-sur-Sioule, about 50 kilometres north of Clermont-Ferrand. The planning approval procedure was initiated in November 2006. The power station is designed for intermediate load operation, which means it would operate for around 4000 hours per year. The electricity generated will feed into the French grid and be marketed by Atel’s subsidiary in Paris. The power station site is in proximity to a 225/380 kV switchyard as well as the European gas grid.

Atel established its own Paris-based sales company in 2002. Atel Energie SAS counts among the major energy companies in France, behind EDF. With this French gas-fired combined cycle power station, Atel is following its strategy of using proprietary generation capacity to back electricity trading activity in the markets where it is active. In addition to Switzerland, Atel operates its own power stations in Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
