Alpiq Green Battery reduces carbon emissions at Swiss festivals with Swiss hydropower

Lausanne – After Stars of Sounds in Murten, the next assignment is Openair Frauenfeld: With its innovative mobile Green Battery, Alpiq increases energy efficiency with electricity from certified renewable hydropower at Swiss open-air festivals. Use of the battery leads to a massive reduction of the carbon footprint. This solution is another milestone on the way to a more carbon-neutral sustainable power supply for Swiss festivals and events.

Today, and for the next three days, Frauenfeld is the epicentre of hip-hop. While the stars on stage are electrifying the audience at Openair Frauenfeld, two Alpiq Green Batteries are making an important contribution to a quiet, green and secure power supply for Europe’s largest hip-hop festival. As a leading Swiss energy service provider, Alpiq is helping the organisers reduce the carbon footprint of the open-air event with this battery solution.

Green Battery, an offer unique in Switzerland

Festivals and open-air events require a great deal of electrical energy, especially for the event technology, lighting and catering stands. Electrical power accounts for the majority of an event’s total carbon footprint – particularly because there is often no permanent mains connection with sufficient power available on site for the mobile power supply, so mainly diesel generators are used as temporary power supplies.

Diesel generators are usually oversized, run at partial load and are therefore inefficient. This is where Alpiq comes in, with an offer unprecedented in Switzerland: The Green Battery provides the required energy, in stand-alone operation with electricity from certified renewable hydropower, or as a hybrid solution in combination with either the local electricity grid or a smaller diesel generator. With this solution, Alpiq emphasises its position as a leading energy service provider.

Sustainable storage systems replace diesel generators

Openair Frauenfeld is already this summer’s second festival to rely on Alpiq’s innovative solution and energy know-how. Two Alpiq Green Batteries went through a baptism of fire from 4 to 6 July at Stars of Sounds in Murten. There, at their premiere, they impressed across the board and, from the second evening onwards, powered not only the side stage and the backstage area, but also the entire main stage, with electricity directly from the battery. This enabled the organisers to switch off the larger of the two diesel generators provided for the main stage, saving several hundred litres of diesel per day and sustainably protecting the environment.
