The costs for decommissioning and waste disposal of nuclear power plants is reviewed and updated every five years in an extensive study. On 15 December 2016, the Administrative Commission of STENFO established the provisional contributions to the Decommissioning and Waste Disposal Funds based on the 2016 cost study. The contributions for the assessment period from 2017 to 2021 will slightly decrease for the Gösgen and Leibstadt nuclear power plants owing to the new cost basis. The definite figures are expected in the second half of 2018.
How the results of the 2016 cost study will impact the future annual costs of the two companies, Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken AG (KKG) and Kernkraftwerk Leibstadt AG (KKL), depends, among other things, on the provisions that must be made in the annual financial statements for post operation, decommissioning and disposal. Alpiq holds a 40 per cent interest in KKG and a 32.4 per cent interest in KKL, and contributes to the annual costs on a pro rata basis.
