Last year Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), operator of Barcelona's underground rail system, commissioned Atel Energía S.A. to deliver electricity from June to December 2010. This agreement has now been extended until the end of 2011. Next year the Alpiq Holding Ltd. subsidiary will supply 260 GWh of electricity to the Barcelona Metro, equivalent to the consumption of a city of around 150,000 inhabitants. The contract extension will bring in another EUR 13.3 million for Atel Energía S.A.
Alpiq has been represented by Atel Energía S.A. in Spain since 2007, and is the largest alternative supplier of electricity to end customers. Besides providing energy to industrial concerns and service providers, the company also specialises in electricity wholesaling and imports.
Alpiq delivers electricity to more than 1,000 customers in Spain. In December 2009 the company acquired Hispaelec Energia S.A.U., the local distribution company of Electricité de France (EDF).
